Spanish Translation IPM Pest Alerts

What is it and what did we do?Ramorium blight on camelia

We coordinated the Spanish translation of two National Pest Alerts to facilitate their use in agriculture in Florida and across the US. UF county faculty has requested materials like these in Spanish so they may interact more with the Spanish-speaking agricultural employees. The two Pest Alerts that were fully translated were Soybean Rust and Sudden Oak Death, both diseases of consequence and both found in Florida. Funds will be used to print these translated versions in color and distribute them to IFAS county faculty. The translators were IFAS county faculty recommended by Dean Dusky: Cesar Asuaje, Palme Beach County Extension; Carlos Balerdi, Ruben Regalado, Miami-Dade County Extension, Homestead, and Laura Miller, Hillsborough County Extension.

What was the outcome?Symptoms of P. ramorum on tanoak that reveals the canker in the inner bark.

Employees of companies in agriculture and county agents will be able to better communicate about these two serious diseases in the US. Knowledge of the disease symptoms will encourage early detection and less expensive management. These diseases impact not just Florida agriculture, but much of the US. Agents at the "Meet Your Specialist" session in October were very interested in the documents and further translations in the future.

Take-home message:

The more people that get education in the disease, the bigger impact we will have in controlling it.
