Advanced Master Gardener Training in Diagnostic Skills

Fall armyworm larvae are pests in many grasses

What is it and what did we do?

Local Extension clientele have grown to associate the Extension Office with reliable and timely information to meet their needs.  As the county population grows and the demand for this information increases it becomes an increasing demand on the Extension staff.  A trained group of volunteers can help fill this need for information for homeowner gardening questions and pest diagnostics.  In light of the increasing environmental concerns for the Ichetucknee Springs basin and local surface water bodies in this North Florida area, it is important that these volunteers be able to recommend pest solutions with minimal toxicity concerns.

A primary request for additional training received at a recent multi-county Master Gardener workshop was in the area of diagnostic skills.  To meet this need a workshop was provided in 2006 to give updates on pest, weed and disease control options and other diagnostic topics.  A “field trip” to the Master GardnerUniversity of Florida campus was included to visit the Plant Pathology and Soil Testing lab facilities.  An emphasis was placed on the proper identification of the problem followed by a “least environmentally harmful” recommendation for the clientele.  Digital cameras, photo reference books and software were purchased to support the diagnostic services of these volunteers and the Extension staff.

What was the outcome?

This training improved the assistance that Master Gardeners offer to clientele when making horticultural problem decisions.  Master Gardeners increased their Columbia Co. Extensionknowledge and confidence level in helping clientele.  As a result of the training, Columbia County Master Gardeners increased their plant clinic participation from one day per week to two.  Master Gardeners also increased their interest and outreach efforts in IPM and other environmental programs such as the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods.

The people that made this happen include:

  • Don Goode, Horticultural Agent, Extension Service, Columbia Co.
Wendy Wilber, Extension Agt I Residential Horticulture, Alachua Co.
