IPM Tool Kit and Training for Professional Landscape Management in Spanish

Project description and objectives:

Traditionally the majority of Extension Landscape Management programming and educational publications available on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) topics    have been produced and directed towards an English speaking audience. However, the situation in Florida is unique because of the influx of Spanish speaking people from Central and South America. The last US Census Bureau shows that 60% of the people speak Spanish in Miami Dade County, 14% in St. Lucie and 10 % in Duval County, 2% in Nassau County. The purpose of this project is to build on the success of last year Hispanic IPM program, by continuing to provide IPM Tool Kit Training in Duval, Fort Pierce, Miami-Dade and Nassau counties. The improvement would incorporate common landscape plant identification to be translated in Spanish for the landscape maintenance professional and adding an additional county (Nassau).

Our objectives are to:
1) Train in Duval, Fort Pierce, Nassau and Miami-Dade on IPM Principles and Techniques to Hispanic Commercial Landscape Maintenance Personnel.
2) Develop IPM materials in Spanish to be used in training, and specifically on the common landscape ornamental plants, grasses, and trees.
3) Finish the Spanish edition of Troubleshooting Lawn Pests (SP 180) and Helpful, Harmful or Harmless (SP130) to be available at the UF bookstore.
